Maxi Dresses by Von Vonni ($98.00 at eDressMe)

Since they made their first appearance with their swooshing skirts and elongating silhouettes, maxi dresses have been an unbeatable go-to for the summer months. But now, with the revival of flowy ‘70’s-style shapes on the catwalk as well as the sidewalk, we’re seeing our friend the maxi make the move from indispensible summer item to fabulous fall frock.

The way to make your summer maxi work as a fall item is to give it some ‘tude; rather than demure flats or flip-flops, try a pair of chunky heels, and as a cover-up try a cropped biker jacket.

Yes, the weather’s finally turned towards temperatures that feel more appropriate to cuddling up in front of a fire than up-ending a kiddie pool in a desperate attempt to cool off and we couldn’t be more relieved.  Why? Because there’s no better time of year to mix and match, layer and adorn; simply stated, autumn is a perfect time to experiment with your wardrobe without freezing/melting your cute patoot off.  One of the trendiest items this fall is a faux fur piece to add a bit of understated luxury to your look.  See how some of our favorite celebrities have been inspiring us!

Preppy

Understated, casual elegance is always in style. The trick is to keep it interesting by playing with lengths and forms. This season, soften up in a sweet wool confection like this one by Beny & Hizzin or add a bit of structure with a boyfriend blazer.

“Eccentric Ladylike”

We’ve been watching the development of this mode for a while now, and we couldn’t be happier to announce that in 2010 everyone from Michael Kors to Top Shop is working it.  The idea is to emphasize the ladylike without looking like Grandma (however much we love her) knitted your outfit.  Cinched waists, 3/4 sleeves and unexpected, feminine embellishments keep it Jackie O. rather than Mrs. Fletcher.  Extra style tip:  with shorter sleeve coats, go Continental glam with elbow-length gloves.

The end of summer is here and fall is near! That doesn’t mean that you have to start putting away your summer wardrobe just yet. There are many styles that you can keep as you transition into fall. Layering fall cardigans and boyfriend blazers over light dresses and trading sandals for a pair of booties are both great ways to carry your wardrobe into cooler months. Just make sure your fall pieces are the focus of your outfit with only subtle splashes of your summer favorites.

Important fall trends to keep in mind while you’re out shopping:

Lace – lace adds a feminine touch to any outfit and is an easy transition piece.
